The RIBA Elects New President
The RIBA Elects New President The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has elected a new President. Ruth Reed will become president elect on the first of September. On the first of September next year, Reed will succeed current president, Sunand Prasad, who will be finishing his two-year term. Reed will become the organization’s 73rd president and the group’s first female leader. Reed’s background includes 25 years’ experience working in architecture. Currently, she is a Partner at Green Planning Solutions and is the Course Director of the Postgraduate Diploma in Architectural Practice at the Birmingham School of Architecture. Green Planning Solutions is an architectural consultancy that specializes in winning planning permission at sites where this is not easily granted. Reed became a Planning Inspector in 2002 and learned that architectural firms were lacking the proper skills and planning needed in order to win planning permissions. Negotiating skills have become an important asset within the British building industry. The soon-to-be RIBA President Elect believes in keeping to a high standard within the group and within architecture in general. She understands that the nature of the practice varies considerably across Europe but that is no reason why Britain should lower standards for its qualified architects. Reed also felt that the RIBA members outside of London are unfairly represented within the group and wants to see them granted more power. She made this issue a major point of her campaign. “The RIBA communicates poorly with its members; and regional architects in particular feel disconnected from the institution.” Reed also said during her campaign that she would like to see the RIBA refocus its priorities on its members. “It’s [the RIBA] been thinking about how it appears to the outside world, but it needs to start thinking about how it appears to its membership,” she said in June. “People don’t buy into what the RIBA does. Wherever I’ve been I’ve been asked the question, what does the RIBA do for me? It would be lovely to have a short, sharp pithy answer. But I haven’t got one.” Other offices that Reed has held include membership within RIBA’s Council as the Vice President of Membership, and Chaired the RIBA’s CPD Sub-committee. She was also President of the Royal Society of Architects in Wales. Richard Hastilow, Chief Executive of the RIBA, commented: “We congratulate Ruth Reed on her success – and welcome the first female president of the RIBA. Congratulations also to Andrew Hanson on a strong result in a closely-contested election.” The Electoral Reform Society (ERS), a group campaigning to change the way elections are held in the UK, conducted the election for the RIBA. Secret ballots were filled out by group members on 13 June and returned to ERS who tallied the results. Reed is excited about becoming the group’s president. “This is a huge honour and responsibility and I am very excited about the prospect of becoming President. Andrew was a great opponent and we had a constructive debate about the future of the profession with the membership. I am looking forward to working with Sunand, I have great respect for him,” said Reed. Observers of the election are happy with the results and believe Reed will become a fine RIBA leader. “This is the first woman president but it’s more than that,” said former RIBA leader George Ferguson. “She’ll be a good president overall rather than just a good woman president.” Maxwell Hutchinson, who also served as president of the group from 1989-1991, is happy for an “outsider” to gain the leadership role: “I’m thrilled for her and it’s also good to have someone from outside London.” Outside of her professional life, Reed lives at home in Birmingham with her two daughters. When she has the time she likes to relax by listening to music, walking, or gardening.
